
Academic Programs: Five Faculties, Approximately 40 Degree Programs
H-BRS comprises five faculties: the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Computer Science, the Faculty of Engineering and Communication, the Faculty of Applied Natural Sciences, and the Faculty of Social Policy and Social Security. The university offers approximately 40 undergraduate and master’s programs, covering fields such as business economics, computer science, mechanical engineering, applied natural sciences, technology journalism, and entrepreneurship.
Some courses are taught in English, reflecting a high degree of internationalization. Master’s programs, such as Autonomous Control Science and Engineering, train students through collaborations with the Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology and the Fraunhofer Institute IAIS. Research Strengths: 18 Research Institutes and an Application-Oriented Approach
As a university of applied sciences, H-BRS is deeply committed to practice-oriented research. The university houses 18 research institutes, with research areas spanning detection technology, genetics, sustainability, resource conservation, security research, and visual computing. Key research areas include security research, visual computing, autonomous systems and robotics, sustainability, resource conservation and energy efficiency, as well as functional genomics.
In Bonn, H-BRS jointly operates the “Bonn-Aachen International Center for Information Technology (b-it)” with the University of Bonn, RWTH Aachen University, and the Fraunhofer Society—one of Europe’s leading institutions for computer science research and education. The university has been awarding doctoral degrees since 2010 and obtained the right to award doctoral degrees independently through the North Rhine-Westphalia Doctoral College in 2022; Currently, approximately 130 doctoral students are enrolled.
Sustainability and Campus Life
H-BRS has developed a comprehensive sustainability strategy covering research, teaching, campus life, and digitalization. The university has received “Family-Friendly” certification seven times since 2007 and offers childcare slots, a parent-child activity room, and a mobile children’s activity room.

H-BRS has established partnerships with 93 universities in approximately 40 countries. In the 2023/24 winter semester, international students accounted for over 18% of the student body; currently, more than 1,700 international students from over 100 countries are studying and conducting research here. The university actively promotes study abroad semesters and summer school programs.
