A Long History
The academic roots of Mainz University of Applied Sciences date back to 1757—the year the Elector of Mainz decided to establish an academy for painters and sculptors.
The university’s independence in the modern sense began on September 1, 1996. At that time, the Rhineland-Palatinate University of Applied Sciences—comprising eight departments—was dissolved, and the former First and Second Departments of Mainz were merged to form Mainz University of Applied Sciences. Since 1999, the phrase “University of Applied Sciences” has officially appeared in the university’s logo.In September 2014, the university’s German name was changed from “Fachhochschule Mainz” to “Hochschule Mainz.”
In 2009, the university moved to a new campus near Johannes Gutenberg University, marking the beginning of a new chapter in its modernization.
Three Schools and Flagship Programs
The University of Applied Sciences Mainz comprises three schools, offering approximately 50 different degree programs:

School of Engineering (1,725 students): Covers disciplines such as architecture, civil and environmental engineering, applied informatics, and geodesy. The civil engineering program offers an international track, and the university excels in the fields of geographic information and surveying.
School of Business (2,803 students): As the university’s largest school, it comprises three departments: Business and International Business, Business Law, and Information Systems. The university is the first in Germany to offer an undergraduate degree in Business Law—as early as 1993, it was among the first to recognize the demand from businesses for legal professionals with a solid foundation in business.

Practice-Oriented: The Core Philosophy of a University of Applied Sciences
As a practice-oriented university of applied sciences, Hochschule Mainz’s teaching emphasizes “the integration of theory and practice”. All professors hold doctoral degrees and have worked in their respective fields for at least 8 years, achieving notable accomplishments.
The university participates alongside Johannes Gutenberg University in the Mainzer Wissenschaftsallianz (Mainz Science Alliance), which is dedicated to interdisciplinary collaboration. The university’s distinctive character is also reflected in its application of interdisciplinary thinking—within a network spanning the three major fields of design, engineering, and business, scientific and practical thought patterns from different disciplines are reconnected in teaching and research.
Germany’s First Business Law Program
Hochschule Mainz achieved a “first” in the history of German higher education—in 1993, the university became the first in Germany to offer a bachelor’s degree program in Business Law (LL.B.). The program lasts 7 semesters, awards 210 ECTS credits, and offers three specializations: Labor Law and Human Resource Management, Compliance and Commercial Criminal Law, and Taxation and Accounting. Students do not need a background in law or economics to apply. The semester fee is only 343 euros per semester (including a semester ticket).
