Sports Venues and Fitness Facilities

Under the visionary leadership of President Dr Mark A. Brown, the Athletics Department at Tuskegee University is undergoing an “era of renewal”. The iconic Daniel “Chappie” James Centre is undergoing a major refurbishment and will be equipped with state-of-the-art basketball court flooring, upgraded LED arena lighting and cutting-edge digital video scoreboards, creating the most historic and modern championship-calibre venue in HBCU sport. The project is expected to be completed before the graduation ceremony. What a Tuskegee University Diploma brings back is genuine ability

The football facilities have also received a grant of $78,000 from the Tuskegee Alumni Housing Foundation to refurbish the changing rooms and construct new training rooms and player lounge areas. Tuskegee University’s sports teams compete in the NCAA Division II and offer a range of men’s and women’s sports, including baseball, basketball, cross-country, football, tennis, athletics, volleyball and softball.

Tuskegee University’s alumni network spans the globe, with 1,748 alumni registered in the Atlanta area alone. The roster of distinguished alumni is star-studded: Grammy Award-winning, legendary singer Lionel Richie; Keenan Avery Waynes, creator of the comedy series *In Living Colour*; in the world of sport, Alice Kochman, the first African-American woman to win an Olympic gold medal; and in the military, Daniel ‘Chappy’ James Jr., the first African-American four-star general in the US. In the same year, the university partnered with the Baptist Health System to launch a registered nurse apprenticeship programme, the first of its kind in Alabama. Students receive one-to-one mentoring from experienced nurses whilst also being paid. The university has also partnered with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to integrate artificial intelligence tools into its curriculum, helping students prepare for careers in the technology sector.
