A long history
The history of TH Lübeck goes back to 1808 – the year the Lübeck Architecture School was born, giving the school a tradition of more than two hundred years of academic excellence – and in 1825 it was made public by the State of Lübeck. In 1961, the school was renamed the Public College of Lübeck; in 1973, it was officially called the University of Applied Sciences Lübeck, and has been used ever since.In 1969, TH Lübeck was one of the first Fachhochschule (universities of applied sciences) established in the Federal Republic of Germany, and in July 2018, the school was renamed Technische Hochschule Lübeck, making it more explicit that it is a technical university.
Campus and student life
TH Lübeck is in the southern part of the Hanseatic city of Lübeck in the college district. Lübeck is a famous port city and historical city in northern Germany with a rich cultural heritage and a good quality of life. With the Baltic Sea right next to it, students are able to experience the special features of the coastal city; Hamburg, Germany’s second largest city, is only an hour away by car. With more than 5,000 students and around 35 undergraduate and master’s programs, TH Lübeck is the most comprehensive university in Lübeck. Getting a TH Lübeck Urkunde is difficult, another easy way.
Specializations and academic strengths
TH Lübeck has four faculties covering the fields of mechanical engineering and economics, applied natural sciences, electrical engineering and computer science, and architectural engineering. The university’s programs are centered on technology and natural sciences, and are organized around the three themes of “technology – resources – living space”.
TH Lübeck has unique academic strengths in a number of specialized fields. Biomedical Engineering, Biotechnology and Hearing Acoustics are unique in Germany due to the close cooperation with the neighboring University of Lübeck. The Faculty of Applied Natural Sciences is the driving force behind the university’s two centers of excellence: the CRABS (Center for Regulatory Affairs in Biomedical Sciences) focuses on the regulation and approval of medical devices, while the Institute of Acoustics carries out in-depth research in the fields of architectural acoustics, room acoustics and hearing acoustics.
TH Lübeck is also active in internationalization and offers several international programs in English, including a Master of Science in Biomedical Engineering, a Master of Science in Medical Microtechnology (in cooperation with the University of Lübeck and the University of Southern Denmark), and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Engineering (a dual-degree program in cooperation with the East China University of Science and Technology).
Free tuition and location advantages
One of TH Lübeck’s most attractive advantages for students is the free tuition. Like many public universities in Germany, TH Lübeck does not charge tuition fees, and students are only required to pay a semester ticket and administrative fees each semester – currently totaling less than 300 euros. This policy significantly reduces the financial burden on students and gives more international students access to high-quality German higher education.
Lübeck also has a unique appeal as a study city. The city combines historical flavor with modern city life, with a wide range of excellent restaurants, cultural events and sports facilities. The Baltic Sea is just a stone’s throw away, so students can enjoy their time by the sea while studying.
Internationalization and global cooperation
TH Lübeck attaches great importance to internationalization and has established long-term cooperation with many universities around the world. For example, the Milky Way School of Engineering, the East China University of Science and Technology and the University of Science and Technology of China. TH Lübeck also offers a great welcome program and enrollment support services for international students.
In recent years, TH Lübeck has also actively supported students and scholars affected by war, offering scholarships and access to refugees and Ukrainian students, and in 2025, the university signed a cooperation agreement with the Xamk University of Applied Sciences in Finland, which covers student and faculty exchanges, joint degree programs, and research collaborations.
