From a Mining School to a Research University

Michigan Technological University (MTU) is located in Houghton, on Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, with a campus nestled alongside Lake Superior and surrounded by breathtaking scenery. The university was founded in 1885, originally named the Michigan School of Mines, with the aim of training mining engineers for the local copper mines—in its first year, it enrolled just 23 students and 4 faculty members. In 1897, it was renamed the Michigan School of Mines, and in 1927, it became the Michigan School of Mines and Technology. In 1964, it was officially named Michigan Technological University.

After 140 years of development, MTU has grown from a regional mining school into one of the nation’s top public research universities. The university spans 925 acres and is home to more than 7,400 students from over 55 countries worldwide. The motto “Create the Future”—this is not just a slogan, but something every MTU faculty member and student puts into practice every day. R1 Accreditation: Ranked Among the Nation’s Top Research Universities

In 2025, MTU reached a historic milestone—it was officially recognized as an R1 research university by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. Among more than 4,000 degree-granting institutions in the United States, only 187 have received this distinction. MTU is not only the fourth R1 university in Michigan but also one of only two R1 universities in the United States located in a rural area.

This designation is backed by concrete data: the university’s annual research expenditures total $124.2 million, with external funding exceeding $109 million, and it boasts 376,000 square feet of research space. Undergraduate students alone contribute more than 101,000 hours annually to paid research projects.

Academic Excellence: Engineering Leads the Way, AI Emerges as a New Force

MTU is renowned nationwide for its engineering programs. Engineering majors account for 55% of undergraduate graduates, with a median starting salary of $94,268. In the U.S. News 2026 subject rankings, MTU’s Mineral and Mining Engineering program is ranked 51st–100th globally. Graduates of the Computer and Information Science program enjoy an even higher starting salary of $106,432.

In the fall of 2026, MTU will launch a brand-new undergraduate major in Artificial Intelligence (AI), becoming one of the few universities in the U.S. to offer an undergraduate degree in AI. Dennis Livesay, Dean of the School of Computing, stated: “AI is one of the most disruptive technological advancements in a generation, and we must respond quickly.”

In addition, the university offers more than 125 degree programs, and the Graduate School offers more than 70 master’s, doctoral, and certificate programs. The student-to-faculty ratio is just 13:1, and 48% of classes have fewer than 20 students.

The Enterprise Program: A Bridge from the Classroom to the Industry

If there is one thing that best represents MTU’s educational philosophy, it is undoubtedly the Enterprise Program. This program, now in its 26th year, allows students—regardless of their major—to work in teams to solve real-world problems for real clients in an environment that resembles a business more than a classroom. There are currently more than 25 Enterprise teams, covering fields such as aerospace, data science, and publishing. Three new teams were added in 2026: Aerospace & Rockets, the Urban Intelligence Lab, and Ink & Ore.

As one student put it, “Enterprise gave me the full experience of a real-world project—from design to manufacturing to testing—before I even graduated.” This “learning by doing” model is precisely what gives MTU graduates their core competitive edge.
