Teaching Mode and Class Size: Small Class Size and Practice Orientation
As a typical German Universities of Applied Sciences (FH), Kiel University of Applied Sciences takes practice-oriented as its core teaching philosophy. The course adopts the three-stage teaching mode of “lecture+practice+experiment”-theory is taught in the lecture, and understanding is deepened through practice and laboratory operation. Small class teaching is a prominent feature of this school: compared with Uni, FH has smaller class size, closer interaction between teachers and students, and easier contact with professors, which is especially suitable for students who like personalized guidance. Project assignments run through the course in the form of teamwork, and the undergraduate stage also includes 10 weeks of enterprise internship and 3 months of enterprise graduation thesis. The cooperation ratio between undergraduate graduation thesis of electrical/information engineering specialty and enterprises is as high as 81.0%, and that of mechanical engineering is 80.2%.
Faculty: Pay equal attention to industry experience and academic foundation.
The faculty of the school is mainly experts with both academic background and industry experience. Professors must have many years of experience in industry before they can enter colleges and universities to teach. In the winter semester of 2023/24, nine new professors joined the teaching team. Take the discipline of electrical and information engineering as an example: there are 530 students in the department, and the third-party funds are as high as 473,600 euros per professor; The third-party funding for each professor of computer science department is 196,700 euros; 8,900 euros per professor in the Department of Economics and Industrial Engineering. There are obvious differences between different disciplines, and engineering disciplines have more abundant funds, which provides a solid guarantee for high-quality teaching. The library provides a large number of licensing databases, e-books and electronic periodical resources, which can be accessed remotely outside the school through VPN. The brand-new library learning center “Lerndock23” is under construction, which will provide 400 learning stations and devote itself to creating a diversified learning space in the form of “knowledge department store”.
