The University of Leipzig excels in several disciplines. Medicine is the university’s most renowned field of study. Psychology is also one of its flagship disciplines. In 1879, while serving as a professor of philosophy at the University of Leipzig, German psychologist Wilhelm Wundt established the world’s first psychology laboratory. This marked the beginning of modern psychology. To this day, the undergraduate psychology program remains one of the university’s most popular majors. For the 2025/26 winter semester, the program received nearly 3,700 applications, with an average of 57 applicants per available spot.

In terms of subject rankings, Psychology is ranked 101–150 globally in the QS World University Subject Rankings; Communication is ranked 151st globally; Philosophy is ranked 151st globally; and History is ranked 201st globally. The University of Leipzig ranks among the world’s leaders in fields such as medicine, biology, neuroscience, and psychology.

Research Strength: Three Strategic Areas and Breakthroughs in Elite Clusters

The University of Leipzig has three strategic research areas: “Transformation of Order in a Globalized World,” “Intelligent Methods and Materials,” and “Sustainable Principles for Life and Health.” The university ranks 28th in Germany in the German Research Foundation (DFG) funding landscape. External research funding grew from 53 million euros in 2006 to 175 million euros in 2019.

In May 2025, the University of Leipzig’s “Leipzig Center for Metabolism” (LeiCeM) research cluster stood out in the German federal and state governments’ “Excellence Strategy” competition and was awarded Cluster of Excellence funding. It will receive millions of euros in dedicated funding over the coming years to advance the understanding and treatment of metabolic diseases. The university also hosts one DFG Research Center, five DFG Collaborative Research Centers, two Humboldt Professorships, and six ERC grants.
