SJSU has a rich athletic tradition, and its varsity teams, the “Spartans,” compete in the Mountain West Conference at the NCAA Division I level. The university offers 22 athletic programs (9 men’s and 13 women’s). Historically, SJSU athletic teams have won 10 NCAA team championships and 50 individual championships. Strategic Planning to Meet Future Challenges
SJSU has adopted “Transformation 2030” as its strategic blueprint, committed to becoming a nationally recognized urban public university. Core objectives include: enhancing student success, advancing cutting-edge research, promoting inclusivity, strengthening partnerships, and ensuring operational excellence.
President Cynthia Teniente-Matson (SJSU’s first Latina president) launched the “AI Everywhere” campus strategy, integrating artificial intelligence literacy across all areas of teaching, research, and administration. AI literacy training has become a required course for incoming freshmen. Additionally, the Campus Master Plan will guide the redesign and expansion of the campus’s physical spaces, with plans to add 1,500 student slots.
