The University of Munich is one of Germany’s leading research universities. Under the “Strategy for Excellence”—a joint initiative of the federal and state governments—LMU has achieved a major milestone: all seven proposed Clusters of Excellence successfully passed the review process and will receive seven years of funding beginning in 2026. Bavaria’s Minister of Science remarked, “Munich is a sanctuary of excellence in Germany.”
The seven Clusters of Excellence span multiple cutting-edge fields:
- NUCLEATE: Focuses on nucleic acid science and technology, conducted jointly with the Technical University of Munich and the University of Würzburg

- MCQST: The Munich Center for Quantum Science and Technology, exploring the principles of quantum information

Libraries and Sports Facilities
LMU’s library system consists of the Main Library, the Central Textbook Collection, and 13 specialized libraries, with a collection of over 4.9 million books and other media. The libraries provide free study spaces, computer terminals, and printing, copying, and scanning services. There are 8 dining halls and 7 cafés on campus.
In terms of sports, the Munich Central University Sports Center (Zentraler Hochschulsport München)—the largest of its kind in Germany—organizes over 100 sports activities. Students can participate in a wide range of programs, from skiing and fitness to ball sports. In addition, the campus is home to more than 30 student clubs and approximately 20 student choirs, bands, and orchestras.

The employment rate of undergraduate graduates is 93% within 6 months after graduation.
