The history of West Chester University dates back to West Chester Academy, which was founded in 1812. On September 25, 1871, the West Chester Normal School officially opened its doors, enrolling its first class of 130 students. In 1927, it was renamed West Chester State Normal College, and in 1960, it transitioned to West Chester State College and introduced a liberal arts curriculum. On July 1, 1983, the institution officially became one of the 14 universities in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education. In 1981, the campus’s Quadrangle Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the university comprises six colleges, including the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Business, and the College of Education, offering more than 118 undergraduate majors, over 80 graduate programs, and five doctoral programs.
