History and heritage: a young institution born to ease the pressure on education
The history of the University of Campania is not long, but it has an important mission: on March 25th, 1991, the Italian government issued a decree establishing the University in order to relieve the overcrowding of Federico II, the oldest university in Naples, and on November 1st, 1992, the University became independent. the school officially began to operate independently.
In 2016, the school was renamed the University of Campania in honor of the famous 18th century Italian architect Luigi Vanvitelli – who designed some of the grandest architectural complexes in Naples and the Caserta region. As a young university, the University of Campania’s performance in international rankings is impressive. It is ranked 542nd in the world in the US News World’s Best Universities 2025-2026. In the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, the school has stabilized in the 501st-550th global range in recent years.
At the subject level, the university’s medical field is particularly outstanding – it has long been ranked between 251st and 301st globally in the THE rankings; and the life sciences field is equally impressive, with a stable position of 301st-400th globally. The 16 faculties of the University of Campania are distributed in 5 campuses, with an extremely wide coverage of disciplines:
